LSA James Arthur Whitehead (Mac/Art)
passed away on 10 May 2010, two weeks before his 75th birthday

Served around the late 50's, early 60's

I’ve not seen enough of the man that’s me dad
whatever time is left, it’s not enough

We’ve not played enough games together,
doms, chess, darts or cards

Whatever the game is, it’s never enough

We’ve never played enough football, monopoly or scrabble
he’s never bought home enough toy soldiers and match box cars

The swapping of buying comics for The New Junior Encyclopaedia
at the time seemed enough, but now the whole collection is not enough

For being naughty, he’s never told me off enough
for being bad, well the spankings were enough!!

We’ve never been shopping enough for a family of five
rewarded with sweets for helping to carry the goods

Not enough holidays to butlins, statics or b&b’s
Not enough early morning walks by the sea

Not enough trips down the arcade
or evenings down the pub, mines a pint, his is lemonade

We’ve never watched enough documentaries
or films or comedies

Never discussed politics enough
or crime or injustice, never enough!

We’ve never talked enough about the weather
or walked out enough, whatever the weather

He’s not been over to our house enough
he’s not been out in the garden no-where near enough

He’s never passed on enough Navy News
but his navy stories are certainly enough!

I’ve never took him out enough in my nice new car
we never sat out at night, staring at the stars

The dog’s not wagged its tail enough when we visit
and its not licked its lips enough, knowing there’s always a biscuit

We’ve never watched enough, the world going by
laughing and asking each other, “what’s it all about and why?”

We’ve never discussed enough, the finer art of biscuit dunking
and we never dunked biscuits enough whilst discussing finer art

He’s never advised me on the best career path to take
but what he did say was ‘no matter what you do, son......always look busy’

I’ve not felt sad enough about moving so far away
or about not ringing him every day

I’ve not told him enough of how I’ve turned out and what makes me strong
I’ve not told him enough of how time without him will seem too long

Now, its sad thinking we’ve not done enough
but my wonderful memories, are good enough

Whatever a father and son could do together
you know it was never enough

I’ve not seen enough of the man that’s me dad
what ever time is left, it is never enough

Hello George, nice to hear from you. Sorry, but I think you're wrong. I checked with wikipedia and her armament in 1960, before I joined her, was as follows.
(quote)Armament:
* 6 QF 4.5 in /45 (114 mm) Mark V in 3 twin mountings UD Mark VI
* 4 40 mm /60 Bofors A/A in 2 twin mounts STAAG Mk.II
* 2 40 mm /60 Bofors A/A in 1 twin mount Mk.V
* 2 pentad tubes for 21 in (533 mm) torpedoes Mk.IX
* 1 Squid anti submarine mortar (unquote)
When I joined her, the two twin mounted bofors had been changed to two single mounts. They were definately bofors. STAAG (not STAG) stands for (Stabilised Tachymetric Anti-Aircraft Gun) which is a type of gun, not a 'make' of gun. Any 'make' can be a STAAG.

From: george walker (helmsman@talktalk.net)

to GRL,diana never had single mounted bofors iether side of the bridge.they were S.T.A.Gs standing fro single tichometric anti aircraft guns.totaly different from a bofor.

I served on Diana 64 -67 along with my twin brother Peter and enjoyed most of it. I too can remember living in the huts in Drake whilst in Refit and watching the field gun. Being a TAS ape I was in the after messdeck. My PO was Tosh (Ty) Harding UC1. My Killick was Dan (I don't get seen off) Archer. Gan was the ships favourite run ashore as most of the ships company drunk the RAF Mess dry and tried to swim home from it; Happy days. George Kirbride where are you?

Hello Jason. Thanks for your message. The markings on the case are confusing for several reasons. As far as I know, Diana didn't have any 25mm weapons on board. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will let me know....Also, are you sure the 'RLB' isn't 'RBL?' If it's the latter, it stands for 'Rifled Breech Loading'. Ammo wouldn't have had the name of the ship on it as the ammo was universal. What I reckon is that the person who originally owned it, bought it in an auction sale, hence the 1/lot 4. then had the name of ship engraved on it along with the words, '25 pounder'. If it had been an official stamp, it would have been 25mm or 40mm..certainly not 'pounder'. I can't remember if the date would have been stamped on the case, but if not, it was probably the year in which the previous owner served on her. I served as a gunner on the ship in 64/65 and she certainly didn't have a '25 pounder' on her then. She was fitted with 2 sinlge mounted 40mm bofors and one twin mounted 40mm bofors. You've got me interested now, so if I can come up with anything else, I'll post again.

I served on Diana 55/57, I joined the ship early when she was in dry dock. I was the instigator of the 56/57 assocciaton and lent snowy a hand in the early days. Sadly the 56/57 commission ceased meeting by common consent. I am still in touch with some of the lads but our numbers are diminishing, I see a few of our old boys are still interested, all credit to the crews of both commissions. I might just have a guklpers now, cheers

My father John Fleming passed away Aug 10th 2000 after a brave battle with colon cancer. I spent many Sunday afternoons with his friends at the royal navy club in Liverpool. I am trying to determine the status of a claim he made against the mod for the nuclear testing in the mif 1950's. It was his opinion that nothing would ever come of the claim as the government would never relent or open up the records. My mother in law has recently informed me that the high court will allow the litigation to proceed.
Can anyone help me finding the solitor or class action law suit my father might be a part of ? Kind regards John Fleming jnr

Hi There everyone who views this guest book. Its nice to see the various comments from ex Diana ratings, and only one negative one. As the ships photographer of my days on board (1954-56), its my job to see that photos submitted are in good condition to be viewed. So please send you photos to me at the address above, and I will tart them up and place them on the site in the name of the sender. Cheers, and please keep sending messages to let us know how you are getting on. Also if any of you who have made inquiries about trying to contact anyone, let us know if you had any luck. Cheers John.

Joined Diana '63/'64 in Guzz for refit. Remember living in the huts and watching the Field Gun crews training. Then on to Singers via the Beira patrol, and Gan. The MAAg gearbox on the Port screw never did work properly. Hated most of the time I spent on the Diana, and subsequently volunteered for boats. Transferred to boats in '67, and never looked back. Served from '67 to discharge in'73, And was never happier. Sorry to rain on your parade, but I personally hated my time on the ship

My last post on this site was in March '08. Since then I have read the many sad instances of crew members suffering subsequent cancers following their exposure to the Monte Bello fiasco. Thank God I served on ''Diana'' a year after this but surely it is more than time that the Government acknowledged the MOD's culpability in this shocking affair. When and where is the next re-union? Why can't we organise a deputation to 10 Downing Street? It is more than time that Gordon Brown and his cronies acknowledged their own shortcomings and gave a thought to the people who have laid down their lives in order that they can live the very comfortable lives that they do.
