My maternal grandmother was Jane Lindley nee Baker.Her youngest daughter Dorothy was my Mother.She married my father in 1935.His name was Louis Stollard came from Kingsley near Fitzwilliam Yorks, I don't know how they met. I have a sister Patrica. I have fond memories of Sth Milford as a child. We used to go to Bertha Rowley's who had a sweet shop in her front room. We thought this place was magic.Fred Sunderland was the local undertaker,Herbert Elsworth had the fish and chip shop. the coop was directly opposite my Aunt Jane's house, she had two neighbours living in the same grounds as her.All the three dwellings had belonged to her uncle Tom Baker.Her neighbours in the bungalow were called Harrison and in the other house was a Miss Webster then a family called Rutherford.

I was born in South Milford in Steincroft Road, 1956. Spent the first ten years of my life living in Bradford before moving to live in Ireland with my Dad Leslie and my Brother Gary. I used to spend most of my holidays and the odd weekend at my Grandparents in Steincroft Road. Even after moving to Ireland in 1966, my brother Gary and I spent our Summers in South Milford. I remember names such as, Gavin Borrodale, David Young, Andrew Sands, Graham and Neil Fisher, Malcom, Stephan and Ian Jenkinson, but to name just a few. My cousins used to live in Milford, Dulcie, Susan, Philip, Martin, Desmond and Linda Close. Ah, I have very fond memories indeed of my time spent in South Milford. It certainly was a great place to grow up. I haven't been to Milford for over twelve years and would probably not recognise it now. If anyone would like to reminisce about the ''old days'', or take a walk down ''memory lane'', then feel free to send me an email.

Villagers Beware BURGLARS out there!!! I didn't think it would happen in our Sleepy Little Village!! We were burgled sometime early Friday morning. They gained entry through a kitchen window which was not closed properly. I don't have a lot worth stealing but they took my kids Nintendo's and laptop and my handbag and wallet. No Cash!!! So was it worth it for them??? Just left me with a lot of hassle replacing cards etc...

The fondest memory i have of sout milford is right from a very young age, myself and my sister emma would go to south milford chapel about 2 weeks before xmas and put the christmas tree up in the chapel, we would also get the stalls ready for the annual xmas fair and help my grandma and grandad (irene and cyril jackson of burley close) to run their stall and for years my grandad dressing up as santa and giving presents to the children in the chapel and i had no idea it was him! Also the flower festivals and having my picture in the paper for being the youngest person to enter the competition that year (i think 1995?) i also remember going to the post office for some sweets when we went to see grandma and grandad (the sweets were all in jars, the old fashioned way) and the really lovely lady and gentleman who ran it (i cant think for the life of me what their names were). lots and lots of happy times. this website is brilliant and the photos are superb. i'll get my grandma and grandad to have a dig around and see if they have any interesting photos to show you.

I used to live in Milford in the Glorious 70's. Very happy years before we emigrated. Went To SM Primary and briefly to ''The Old'' school. Mr Burnley WAS THE BEST HEAD MASTER EVER! (RIP) Used to have some great friends;
Julia Cook used to live at Pollum Farm, Lumby. I lived at 7 The Avenue opposite Simon & John Davies.
Elizabeth Kirk also lived at Lumby.
Adrain Wormald and his parents had the sweet shop (when sweets were halp a pence) Fruit Salads & Black Jacks.
Used to love making Dens down Westfield Lane or conkering at the big old house (Donovans)next to school field. Was it Andrew Sands that used to recall bombing around on his Fizzy 50 Motorbike?Other people that I remember;
Micheal & Ian Hamilton
The Turnbulls (Jason, & his mother was the School dinner lady)
Chapmans (Dad used to be the Vicar)
Nicky & Christian Dale from Sands Lane
Friends that had The Swan (think the girls name was Sarah)
Oh, and the best was Fishing with Nets for Sticklebacks in the best and swinging from that HUGE rope swing at the Willows near Sherburn, and picking flowers in Little & Big Blue Bell wood, and frightening ourselves silly with Ghost Stories about the face at the window at Steeton Hall.
Nostalgia! Don't ya love it? I live in Hull now, but still get across that way when I visit Squires on the bike. Hello to anyway that knows me. SOUTH MILFORD WAS a great place to grow up.

I'm actually trying to trace any descendant's Rev. Frederick John Young. I'm actually a descendant of Frederick John Young's brother William Chambers Young. Any information will be much appreciated.
I can't wait to visit South Milford next year when I move from Australia for a year!
Thanks

Hello South Milford folk. You will have seen the message from Sophie Levitt. I have just found a connection between Burton Salmon and Milford. In the 1851 census, there was a household in Shadwell headed by John Furniss aged 78, a farmer of 10 acres.
Living with him was his grandaughter Sarah Jane Furniss
aged 13yrs. Sahah was born in Milton. I am collecting facts about Furniss families for my web site http://FurnissWorld.org
Best wishes to all.

With deep regret, sadly on the 6th February 2008, Mrs Sheila Mattison passed away. She was the lady who won the dvd player when the Parish Plan was produced.
Sheila had lived in the village for over 13 yrs and was an avid dog walker.
Sheila had much love to give and she had a wonderful sense of humour. A humour shared with four generations of my family.
My daughters loved her very much. My grandchildren thought she was great. Last year my great grand-daughter was born and Sheila spent much time with her. Our lives are richer because they have been touched by a special lady. She will be sadly missed.

Very surprised not to see anything about the Village Fete on this site. How successful was it? Will it be held next year? Sadly the only thing mentioned about any events of Village Fete week is the graffiti on the new statue in the garden!!! Hmmm....

Hello neighbors et al... I was really looking forward to the Village Fete - it was advertised as a Bonanza and I am sure that it was the weather that let us down. So do we say ''Better Luck Next Year?'' At least the last week has cheered up; just in time for the School Holiday!

I am surprised that there are not more comments here, or any write up of the event. Who misses the Village Message Board? I do!!!

We recently heard of the death of Alan Sunderland from his second cousin John Maynard, when he found a contact whilst going through Alan's papers. My husband and I met with Alan in August 2006 for the first time. Alan thought he was the last of the Sunderlands. Alan was grandson to Robert Sunderland and Harriett Rowley of Sunderlands Yard. John Maynard is their great grandson.My husband Richard Sunderland is also their great grandson, so the 'Sunderland' family name direct link to South Milford still lives on.

With regards
Mr & Mrs Richard Sunderland

Lots of people tracing details of relatives on here. Check out the 'Tadcaster WW1' website for some painstaking work collecting ancestory relevant to the whole area. Expanding all the time and Milford is so far lacking but the Sherburn one is really interesting. A collective effort might get these guys on the case. They should never be forgotten.

I just couldn't resist this one when I stumbled upon the link in the Genuki web site. My name is Bob Needham and I live in Australia. My 6G Grandfather, George BAKER was born in South Milford. His son William was born there in 1731. William's son George in 1754 and finally his son, also George in 1793. This last George was my 3G Grandfather. So hallo to all at South Milford. Looking at your 1914/18 war memorial inscriptions, which is full of Bakers, it is probable that I have some distant relations still in the district. If anyone has Baker info I would appreciate a line to my e mail address. Cheers for now and all the best.

Nice to see and read about the village where I grew up in the 1940/50s. Recognise many of the pictures and stories including the explosion in 1945 which I witnessed. Does anyone recall school teacher Mrs Batty. Recently made contact with Ruth (was Dale) now Holdsworth who lived next door but one at 13 Railway Cottages - next to Maltkilns. We walked down to the site where the houses used to be. Like to hear from others from that era.

Interested to read about the Gascoigne Wood explosion but when I told my father Cyril Panton he told me it was his father Herbert Panton who was injured not Edward (my father's brother). Edward gave my dad a lift back home on his bicycle after he heard the explosion. Herbert had cuts to his face, he was shaving when the explosion blew the house windows in.
