* * * * * * * * * * * * * From: Nancy Kelly Home page: http://www.nancykelly.com April 15 2003 As we know Music is subjective and ones impression is truly personal.   I am very grateful for John's kind words. My self and others with talent might be lost as we fight the cooperate take over of our beloved music if it were not for soldiers of truth like John Gilbert out there fighting for us. We now live in what I call The ''K Mart Society'' Our country has all but lost sight of culture and grace and appreciation of the fine things. John your words are the light that help guide my way down this dark and lonely path and give all of us some hope...And spirit to keep the art form alive Thank you John

John: Good website, I read yor reviews. By the way I emailed Tommaso Starace and let him know that he should let you post a review of his latest CD and not be concerned that I had already reviewed it. As for your reviews on this site, I had the pleasure of meeting and hearing Michele Anastacio on a cruise last year, she's a great singer. In January I also met Carl Saunders and Andy Martin at the Florida International University Jazz festival for which I wrote a concert review and was posted on ejazznews in January. Have his Be Bop Big Band album which is one of the best big band CDs ever. Well take care.

Hey Johnny; This is Joan again. A friend of Ronnie's (my brother, the drummer), saw my letter to you in you column and got hold of me to get hold of Ronnie. So you never know who will read this. She and her husband were doing a documentary on Mose Allison, whom Ronnie did several albums with and -layed lots of gigs. They were able to connect and Ronnie went to NY and met with Mose and the couple and did their documentary. She wanted Ronnie in it since he was a big part of the Loft scene. Thanks and keep jammin'. Joan.

Could I send you along some of our recordings? I have
a disc out with some great West Coast folk- Page Cavanaugh, Joyce Collins, and La Getz. Just heard
Page out at Charlie O's a couple weeks ago, going again
to hear him on May 16th. Thanks for the good word!

Cool Site!!!

I wanted to tell you that the Jimmy Zito that you mentioned is not related to Torrie or Ronnie Zito who was Bobby Darins drummer. Ronnie and Torrie are my Uncles. My father was Freddie Zito who played Trombone. He played on Kentons band and did the solo on Sothern Scandle.

John Gilbert,
Good to connect with a real supporter of real jazz. As someone privileged to call myself a friend of Nancy Kelly, the very best feamle jazz singer OF ALL TIME, it's important for me as someone who refuse to accept medioctiy in the jazz musicains to whom I listen to connect with others adhering to a similar standard.

Peter Thompson,

Hi Johnny: It;s been a bit since I updated you on happenings in our area. Last time it had to do with Jennifer Hall. Going forward, a new venue emerged Called the Hush Harbor Artisan Bakery in Atascadero , CA. Doing two shows per date,we opened in October with guitarist John Stowell, selling out both shows a month in advance at $45/ticket. Having these Jazz Dinners at about 6 week intervals, our next date was with a local trio and vocalist, sold out again. Feb 14th saw two sold out shows ($55/person) to enjoy a trio of Kristin Korb(bass/vocals), Todd Johnson 6 string bass and me on drums. in April (again sold out @ $65/person)we had the jazz legend, Red Holloway, backed by myself and local players. Then we had a wonderful NYC performer and a favorite of yours, Lenore Raphael, backed by Todd Johnson and myself, again sold out shows @ $75/person. Lenore absolutely wowed the 64 people who attended. And I don't know of a more rewarding playing opportunity. Next we will welcome a great artist, as you well know, guitarist Doug MacDonald on 7-3-04. Todd Johnson and I hope to afford him suitable backing. So Jazz is alive and well here in SLO. We are always trying to open new venues to support the cause.
Best, Pat

Hey John, Thanks for the great review. One small correction, on my song "I Want A Good Looking Lover" (on which I wrote the music and lyrics), I only sang. The 'Matti Oilling Boiling's Big Band played (with Richie Cole on alto sax) and a band member played the piano. I probably made one of my usual mistakes. Anyway, not only do you profile artists, but give insight to their personalities and what drives them in pursuit of their artistic goals. You also show insight about you and Mrs. Johnny Jazz' willingness to encourage us to 'keep on, keeping on'. Did I say thanks? Cheers, June Harris

Way to go with building a great site. You are looking good and I'm certain as energetic as ever. I saw Bruno DelGranado on a late night ABC program where he was the music critic. Apparently, he is well known in the NYC music scene and he works for Maverick. ( Could be Madonna's label...I'm not sure.)

Be well, Be stromng Be Hip BeeBop.

Hey John. I really dig your site and the happenings on it. I was Chet Baker's longtime drummer and perhaps his closest friend other than the late Jack Pelzer. I'll be sending you my latest CD, "That Trio Thing," for you to review. Until then...keep swingin' like we did on 52nd Street during the late 40's and early 50's when I could walk in and sit in with Bird, Dexter, Bud, Tadd, Richie and all the other cats that make the greatest form of jazz in history, BOP!!! The book about me will be released sometime in April/May. GOD bless you my man. Your contemperary from the bop era, Artt Frank.

Hi Johnhy Jazz,
Yr site is great.
The stuff you're doing is great too.
That's an apt definition, jazz was invented to torture the imbeciles... I like that.
I too write for three of the five or six jazz portals you have mentioned i.e. allaboutjazz.com, euroclubdejazz.com and jazzreview.com.
It seems indecent that we don't write to each other.
Do write again.

Hi Johnny. Wonderful jazz info site you have. Was delighted to see info about Jennifer Hall. Jennifer is coming our way 6-28-03 and will be appearing w/ our group at San Luis Obispo's latest jazz place,Z Pie Cafe. We try to balance our presentations between a fine crop of local performers and out of area headliners. After Jennifer's stay,we are looking to have LA's fine guitarist, Matt Aschkynazo in July. John Stowell has been here with us on many occasions.
Bottom line: we're trying to expand venues available to quality artists who are not quite household names. I know you can appreciate that notion.
Your area many harbor a vast jazz audience but here in SLO that's not exactly the case. Cambria's Charlie Shoemake and his Famous Artist series has been at it for 12 years and finally is seeing an well deserved upswing in numbers at his concerts. As of today, we were treated to a great show featuring the outstanding pianist,John Campbell supported by two fine local players, Darrell Voss on drums and Dylan Johnson on bass.
Thought you might enjoy a little insight into happenings in our area.

Pat
