In a house we were staying, at Skenes Creek on the Great Ocean Road, I had the chance to read some old Australian bush poems and fell in love with them. A friend gave me a book of them as a farewell gift, but it doesn't contain ''Clancy of the overflow'' which I remembered from reading The Thornbirds. Looking it up I came across your lovely site, it is a treasure trove and I am sure I shall return again and again.I have 2 brothers and a sister living in Australia so I have a special feeling for your beautiful land that I don't have for other countries I have visited. Took me back to my schooldays in North Queensland in the thirties, in little bush schools at Silkwood,Mourilyan,Julatten, & Euluma Creek . ''The women of the west'' brought to mind my mother when we lived in ''a tent beside the 'bankment of a roadworks just begun'' in those places. And all those Aussie poems we learned by heart out of those readers! As a boy I soaked them up like blotting paper. Thanks a million for gathering them all together for our delight. Every now and then memories of my childhood in the bush bubble up and i want to cry for what i never appreciated at the time and what my children will probably never know.
